This project which is located in Carlton is what an outdoor room is all about ! The clients came to us with a simple suggestion to “make me a cafe feeling alfresco that is warm and inviting all year round”. As big coffee drinks and lovers of alfresco dining, they really wanted something that was similar to what Carlton offers in terms of a cafe feeling room. With this brief we developed the followin concept design and ultimately the construction of the project.

Existing site

The existing property is what you would expect from a house in the Carlton area – small compact courtyard. There really wasn’t muchroom too move around let alone to build an alfresco area. So we hit the drawing boards and came up with four concepts for our clients.

Concept 1

Concept 2

Concept 3

Concept 4

Final Concept

As well as offering four concepts to our clients we also produce a final concept. The final concept at times incorporates different elements from the various other concept designs. For this particular project the client really loved concept four and opted to go for that design with minor tweaks and alterations.

Completed Project

The completed alfresco entertainment area which was inspired by concept 4 includes Cantilevered roof with GLOSSWOOD timber lining, sky lights, an outdoor kitchen with running cold/hot water, HEATGLOW outdoor radiant heaters to name a few. The whole area is warm and inviting that can be enjoyed all year round regardless of weather conditions.

Landscape Design Melbourne.

Landscaping your property can be a daunting task! Where to begin? Most us come by the need for some type of landscaping to surround our homes with a garden setting. What goes into that garden setting is up to you. You might be looking for a plant filled oasis that you can potter about in all weekend, or maybe you want to entertain family and friends. You might want to put a pool or a putting green in, or highlight some beautiful sculpture that you picked up on your overseas travels. Spaces and Places specialise in Landscape Design Melbourne.

This project we are going to have a look at is in Melbourne’s inner east suburbs. The family decided that instead of moving to a new bigger home, they would renovate to accommodate for the now teenage kids needing a bit more space. The new renovation meant that the house wrapped around the back garden with all of its windows looking into the space. Unfortunately the space was tired and uninspiring.

The dog especially has to be given consideration in a landscape design, after all he is part of the family – and probably the one who is going to use the space the most!

The family started the process thinking that they wanted a pool, but quickly discovered that an ordinary pool was going to take up a lot of valueable space. They really wanted more entertaining and garden area.

This is typically the landscape design process. The team at Spaces and Places love to give you options, we want you to be involved in the design process. That is why we start off by giving you 4 different designs to consider – all of them based around your brief.

After we have been through the landscape design processes – the conceptual designs, we started to get serious about finalising the design towards the end product. The beauty of working in 3D, means that we can show you what we are trying to achieve with your design.

The following picture demonstrates this well.

You can see in this photo that what was once going to be a small swimming pool, has now been reduced to a large spa. By doing so, the area is now more open to entertaining, BBQ’ing, space for the dog and for the kids and adults to be able to move more freely around the space.

The image below shows the size of the spa. Large enough to be to float around in and relax on a hot day. The day bed at the rear of it has a water feature coming subtly from between the timbers and wall. This Spa features infloorcleaning – a nice feature to keep your maintenance time down. The landscape design of this space incorporates the notion that the person on the BBQ is not relegated away from the area, but very much part of the hub.

The garden was to designed to be looked onto. The tropical foliage and succulent planting creates a little oasis – in the middle of Melbourne!
